Diabetes on the rise in dogs, cats

The incidence of diabetes in dogs and cats in the US has crept up in the past decade, with an 80% jump in dogs and an 18% rise in cats, according to veterinarian Katy Nelson, who says the increase is linked to pets’ expanding waistlines. Pets with diabetes drink more water and need to urinate more often, and those are commonly the first signs of diabetes, Dr. Nelson said.
