Finesse vs force: How cats and dogs drink

Finesse vs. force: How cats and dogs drink Cats’ drinking style is all about finesse, while dogs are a little bit messier, according to research that analyzed the fluid dynamics of lapping up liquid. Cats drink by inserting their tongues into fluid and pulling them straight out, creating a column of fluid that enters the mouth. A dog smashes the end of its tongue against the water, causing a portion of the liquid to separate from the rest, which the dog then catches before it has a chance to fall back to the bowl — and the floor. The work could prove valuable in technology that relies on fluid dynamics. Discovery (11/24)
