Retractable claws, stealth helped cats outcompete dogs for food

Cats have driven some 40 wild canine species into extinction, but dogs have not driven any feline species into extinction, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Cats were better hunters than dogs and won the competition for prey, the researchers say. More than 30 dog species existed on the North American continent around 20 million years ago, when cats arrived from Asia. Nine wild dog species remain.
